Fairy Writing

Come sapete, noi celti siamo piuttosto "in touch" con il mondo dei "little people", delle fate e fatine, brownies e leprechauns, silkies e sprites. Mi è dunque pervenuta questo bigliettino firmato da Trilli Campanellino, che l'ha fatto arrivare magicamente senza farsi né vedere né sentire, facendolo aparire davanti a me quasi come da solo (e OK, è arrivato via email, anche le fatine si stanno organizzando, cosa credete, che non si interessano di tecnologia? Che rimangono all'età della pietra?)

As you know, we Celts are pretty much in touch with the magical world of the little people, of fairies, brownies and leprechauns, silkies and sprites. Therefore it was not much of a surprise to me when I received this note from Tinkerbell, who had it arrive magically without herself being seen or heard, making it just appear out of nowhere in front of me (OK, OK, it arrived by email, so you thought the little people weren't techno-minded, did you? Thought they were still back in the stone age, eh?)

Handwriting

A Natale succede una cosa ormai inconsueta: arrivano bigliettini scritti a mano da tutti i continenti del globo, e nonostante questi sulla busta esibiscono soltanto il MIO nome e indirizzo, a differenza dalla email che reca quelli del mittente, io so subito da chi arrivano.

Quella scrittura che sembra un assedio ad un castello arriva da Hong Kong. Quella scrittura tonda ed elegante arriva dalla Cambogia. Quella "copperplate perfetto" dall'Australia. Quella infantile e sferica dal sud della Scozia. Quella che sembra una maglia che si disfa dal nord della Scozia.

Persone con magari nulla in comune a parte la comune conoscenza della sottoscritta, eccetto il fatto che la conoscenza della sottoscritta è stata fatta in epoca pre-emailiana. E per questo noi abbiamo avuto la possibilità di conoscere a fondo la propria scrittura a mano.

E mi rendo conto che della maggior parte delle persone conosciute negli ultimi dieci anni, non saprei assolutamente riconoscere la mano. Alcuni di voi siete, e siete stati, oggetti di confidenze profondamente personali, leggo tantissime vostre scritte, di alcuni di voi conosco le facce e la gestualità, di altri sto imparando a riconoscere lo stile.

Allora che triste leggervi con tanto piacere e non conoscere le vostre mani, le scritture che tanto dicono di noi, che sono uniche come le nostre voci, le nostre impronte digitali. Strano che ormai sono nascoste come i nostri corpi, da mostrare soltanto a chi arriva alla più profonda intimità. La mia la denudo sopra.

Every, and sadly now only at, Christmas, something unusual happens: dozens of handwritten cards flow into my (real) mailbox, and although these letters show only MY name and address, unlike email which show the sender's name and address, I always know exactly who they're from.

That handwriting that looks like a attack in full cry is from Hong Kong. That elegant rounded hand is from Cambodia. The perfect copperplate comes from Australia. That round and childlike hand is from the south of Scotland and the one that looks like knitting unravelling is from the north.

People often with nothing in common except that they know me, and that they met me in the days before email. For this reason we had the privilege of knowing each other's handwriting.

And I realise that of the people I've met over the past ten years, I'd recognise the handwriting of practically none. Some of you have been and still are, depositaries of secret confidences, worries and joys. Others are people I read almost every day. I know some of your faces and gestures and I'm learning to recognise others by their styles.

So it's sad to read you with so much pleasure and not know your hands, the writing that says so much about one, that is unique like our voices, our fingerprints. It's strange that we hide our handwriting like our bodies, to be shown only to those who reach the ultimate intimacy.
